Toy Haulers - A Garage on Wheels!

A toy hauler can either be a travel trailer or fifth wheel with a built-in garage located in the back of the model. Toy haulers were designed for consumers that enjoy bringing their favorite toys with them. These RV models can carry or store just about anything; ATV’s, bikes, Jet Ski or your golf clubs. Some toy haulers are even large enough to store a golf cart, two motorcycles or a two-person ATV. They have made a big impact on consumers because they are so versatile.

The cost of toy haulers can range from $16,000 for a small travel trailer, to well over $155,000 for a luxurious fifth wheel, loaded with all the options. The garage space in upper-end models are pretty sophisticated with special lighting, tool boxes and special storage compartments. A small garage on wheels with a place to sleep and eat what more could you want?

A number of RV manufacturers have introduced garages in the back of Class A motorhomes and Class C motorhome. Some are so large that you can actually store a small car in the garage.

Advantages: By having a built-in garage you can now take your favorite toys with you while traveling and they are protected from the weather. In larger models the separated garage keeps the dirt and gas fumes away from the living quarters. It also gives you additional space for maintenance and repairs if necessary. Not all use the garage for storing bikes or ATVs some use the extra space for bunk beds, music studio or an extra kitchen area.

Disadvantages: The living quarters can be cramped, depending on the floorplan. When loading your toy hauler it may become too heavy, resulting in an overloaded unit. Fumes from gas or other liquids can pose a problem with toxic fumes entering the living quarters. Larger models can be extremely long, making it more difficult to maneuver.

FREE GUIDE - Learn How to Spot a Well-Built RV

A common mistake with most new RV buyers is that the floor plan is the most important aspect in their RV purchase. It is estimated that over 90% of new RV buyers focus more on floor plans than anything else.

In contrast, most experienced or educated RV buyers focus on the chassis or frame, drive train, engine, suspension and exterior construction when selecting a particular RV model.

Bottom line - What’s underneath your motorhome, trailer or fifth wheel is the most important aspect and should take top priority in your decision process. Focusing on these important features will ultimately determine how satisfied you are with your purchase.
