Where to buy a quality used RV?

There are three places you can focus on when buying a used RV; motorhome, fifth wheel or travel trailer. You can buy from a private party, RV dealership or you can purchase from a police or seized auction.

Private Party
If you are purchasing from a private seller there are a number of benefits over the other two options. The seller can tell you all that you need to know about the motorhome, fifth wheel or travel trailer you are buying. The seller can share how he or she serviced the unit, any exiting problems or if the unit has been in an accident.  If you are genuinely interested in the RV then the seller will probably be able to lower the price and a certain degree of haggling could take place giving you a better price in the end.

In most cases when purchasing from a private party the price will be much lower compared to buying from an RV dealer. But, there can be a certain amount of risk involved in purchasing from a private buyer. There is no warranty being offered and if the motorhome, fifth wheel or travel trailer you just bought has a major problem you could be out thousands of dollars. It is always a good idea to have the RV unit inspected at the local RV service shop before making the deal.

RV Dealerships
This is the safest but by far the most expensive way of buying a new or used RV. Some advantages when shopping at an RV dealer is they usually have a good selection to choose from. Or, you can custom order your RV and pick the colors and options you would like. New RVs come with a factory warranty or you can purchase an extended RV warranty. You can get financing and you will get a certain degree of after sales attention depending on the dealer. But on the downside you are going to pay for the convenience for shopping at an RV dealership. Buying from a RV dealer is costly because of their overhead and day to day expenses. Of course there is the salespersons commission that needs to be paid along with dealer prep options and on it goes.

FREE GUIDE - Learn How to Spot a Well-Built RV

A common mistake with most new RV buyers is that the floor plan is the most important aspect in their RV purchase. It is estimated that over 90% of new RV buyers focus more on floor plans than anything else.

In contrast, most experienced or educated RV buyers focus on the chassis or frame, drive train, engine, suspension and exterior construction when selecting a particular RV model.

Bottom line - What’s underneath your motorhome, trailer or fifth wheel is the most important aspect and should take top priority in your decision process. Focusing on these important features will ultimately determine how satisfied you are with your purchase.
