If you are like most people, you are not comfortable negotiating a price with a RV salesperson. It is estimated that over 75% of RV buyers pay too much for their motorhome, fifth wheel or travel trailer.
Whether you’re a good negotiator or not, is beside the point. What buyers need to know is the wholesale or invoice costs and fair retail values of the model they are considering. If you understand what a fair cost for the RV is, it makes your job a lot easier when negotiating with your RV dealer.
Tip #1: When it is time to make a major purchase the best advice I can give you is – do your research. The more time you spend up-front in researching your options the more prepared you’ll be when it comes time to purchase your RV.
There are many resources online that can assist you in your research. One company in mind is J R Consumer Resources Inc. at http://www.jrconsumer.com/. They provide RV buyers with helpful buying and rating guide, along with RV appraisal service. This is just one company from a multiple of companies that can help you when it comes time to buy an RV. Remember, research is key to selecting the right RV model and negotiating the best price.
Tip #2: If you are going finance the purchase price of the RV you’re interested in, be sure to make arrangements with your local lender befor you start the negotiation process. All RV buyers need to know what they can afford and what the interest rate is they qualify for. If you don’t know this information you will be at the mercy of the RV dealer. You will end up paying too much for your motorhome or travel trailer, when it comes to financing.
Tip # 3: When you have located the RV model you want to purchase, just don't buy it from the first dealer you talk to. Visit other dealers and go online to see if a similar model exits. E-bay and other auction sites are a great way to find a good deal. You need to know what the inventory is like in your area or region. Especially, if you’re planning on purchasing an expensive RV like; a diesel motorhome.
If there are any local RV shows, you may want to consider attending them to determine if the model you have selected is the right one. Many RV buyers make the mistake in thinking that an RV show offers the lowest prices, they do not. If you find a model at an RV show, you still need to do your research to determine if in fact the price being quoted is the lowest. From my experience it typically is not.
Tip # 4: Before you start negotiating with any RV dealer, you need to do a background check on them. A good source is the Better Business Bureau’s website at www.bbb.org. Type in your zip code of the RV dealership and then on the next screen put in their name. If they have a decent rating, you will be able to see it. If the dealer in question has poor ratings you need to avoid them at all costs.
