When you go the buy an RV for long-term our short-time use, there are several things you should consider before you purchase an RV. Questions like; how much do you want to spend? How much time to you plan to travel? What floorplan best suites your travel needs? Do you want a towable model like a travel trailer or a motorized vehicle like a motorhome?
Another important question is the number of people who will be using the RV on a regular basis. If there are only two people then the size may not be all that important unless you are planning to use the RV for full time use. However if there will be more than two people at one time, the floor plan and sleeping accommodations will play a big role. When considering an RV for family use you will probably need an RV that is longer than thirty feet. There are a number of reasons for this, as mentioned - more sleeping arrangements, larger and more storage tanks to accommodate more people and more storage compartments to hold the stuff we bring along during our travels.
Larger motorhomes also have extra storage space below the floor called the, “basement”. This has become a popular selling feature in motorhomes and is considered a big deal with RV buyers. The basement area can hold a tremendous amount of stuff and is invaluable when traveling full time.
Once you have decided on a particular RV model your focus needs to shift to the overall condition of unit. If you’re purchasing an RV from a private party it may be a wise idea to have the unit inspected by a RV professional. An RV repair shop can perform this task. Be sure to look for water damage or any structural damage that is not noticeable. Roof leaks are a big problem and a qualified professional can help determine the overall quality of unit. If you’re purchasing a motorized unit, like a class A or class C motorhome – you will want to inspect the engine compartment as well. You must make sure everything works before you purchase the RV or get it in writing that the seller will fix any problems.
Another good idea is to ask the seller for permission to take the unit out for a weekend. This will give you time to inspect the unit and make sure the floor plan fits your RV lifestyle. You may need to offer to pay the seller for the use of the RV if you choose not to purchase it, but in either case it’s a good idea if the seller is willing.
